Program Overview

Ion channels are pivotal regulators of neuronal firing, cardiac conduction, pain transmission, and metabolic homeostasis. Genetic and functional alterations in these proteins are directly linked to a wide spectrum of human diseases, making them attractive yet challenging drug targets. Technical obstacles—such as low‑throughput screening and complex gating mechanisms—have historically limited the number of approved ion channel modulators.

The Asian research community has recently gained significant momentum in ion channel drug discovery, leveraging cutting‑edge structural biology, artificial intelligence, and automated patch‑clamp platforms. The Ion Channel Drug Development Forum, part of the Drug Discovery and Innovation Forum 2026 in Shanghai, will facilitate knowledge exchange, showcase emerging technologies, and foster cross‑sector partnerships to accelerate the development of safer and more effective ion channel‑targeted therapies.
